Antique American Hooked Rug, late nineteenth centuryWhile antique American hooked rugs are generally known for their naïve folksy charm., this lovely example takes inspiration from the more sophisticated Axminster and Aubusson rugs that were being made in Britain and France at this time. Here intersecting borders and circles create a large grid whose compartments are filled with naturalistic floral sprays or bouquets, and with cruciform scroll designs in the carious circular nodules of the grid. The pastel palette set on a soft ivory ground is classic Aubusson, as is the style of the floral sprays. Nonetheless, a distinctly American folk art charm still comes through the design, however subtly.
