Antique Heriz/ Serapi, Persia, late nineteenth century - Antique Serapis represent the finest grade of Heriz in terms of design, color, and weave, and this charming example has it all. At the center of the rich red field a cruciform medallion in blue-black and ivory floats freely with a lavish interior embellishment of sinuous vines. Undulating blue-green cornerpieces fill out the field with elaborate arabesque detail. Grand finials and dynamic branches occupy the intervening red ground. A complex ‘turtle’ vinescroll border set against a blue-black ground provides an elegant yet dramatic frame, with minor meander vinescroll minor borders echoing the blue-green of the cornerpieces. Perhaps the most extraordinary quality of the rug is its small scatter size in contrast to the much larger scale customary for antique Serapis of this kind.
