Antique Ghiordes Carpet, nineteenth century - Although the weave and coloration identify this sumptuous carpet as an antique Ghiordes from Western Turkey, its design is rare and extraordinary among rugs of this type. A richly articulated central medallion is enclosed by four monumental cornerpieces, which come together so as the make the intervening cinnamon ground look like another large medallion. The delicate vinescroll border balances the monumentality of the field rather effectively, but the ultimate effect depends mostly on the exquisitely soft and cool blend of pale green, cinnamon, and tans.
