Antique Chinese Rank Badge, China, Early 19th Century - Woven for the wife of a fourth rank military official, this Chinese rank badge depicts a stylized tiger symbolizing courage and ferocity. In addition the minute painted stripes, the hindquarter of the tiger is decorated with the characteristic whorled fur. Lotus blossoms, chrysanthemum motifs and serpentine cloudbands decorate the background while endless knots and colorful fish emerge between the traditional wave patterns. Pinyin wan borders, cloud motifs and water decorated with tonal lishui stripes complete this traditional rank badge.
