Antique Peking Carpet, China, early twentieth century - This antique Peking from China is the epitome of restrained elegance. Four oblong medallions containing pairs of dragons float in a field of fretwork that is so finely drawn that it virtually recedes into the background, making the carpet appear like an open field composition. Several narrow borders frame the field - a blue-ground vinescroll enclosed by two others with ivory ground, nicely echoing the color effects of the field.
