Antique Saddlecloth, China, nineteenth century - On this highly unusual pile saddlecloth, scalloped borders enclosing snippets of flowering vine provide a border for the triangular field which similarly consists of bits of vines. The whole design is surmounted by a classic Chinese cloud pattern along the upper edge. The design has the controlled decorative austerity of classic Chinese ornament, along with the rich, pungent coloration for which Chinese rugs are famed.
