Antique Bidjar, Persia, late nineteenth century - Inspired by the classical taste of French Savonnerie and Aubuson carpets an allover design of curling spiral acanthus vinescrolls unfolds in staggered array across the soft tan field of this impressive antique Bidjar. The intervening spaces are filled with entwined flowering branches and floral clusters or bouquets. The sweeping arabesque vinescroll main border in red and gold on soft green takes us back to the traditional repertoire of oriental carpets, as do the minor vinescroll borders, although borders and field come together is a marvelous decorative harmony despite their differing inspiration. Bidjars are prized for the their tight weave and controlled drawing, and this one certainly lives up to the reputation.
