Antique Bidjar, Persia, late nineteenth centuryA complex design of leafy, flowering vines in serial repeat symmetry unfolds down the length of this arresting antique Bidjar. Each portion of the repeat consists of vines in diamond configuration which spew forth leafy branches approximating a figure-eight shape. Smaller rosettes and palmette motifs fill out the edges of the field to either side. The vinescroll border is comprised of rosettes and serrated s-shaped leaves on a dark ground that contrasts effectively against the red field. The rich detail of the design is facilitated by the tight, fine weave for which Bidjars like this are famed.
