Antique Bidjar, Persia, late nineteenth centuryThe lavish drop-repeat pattern of palmettes and arabesques on the field of this magnificent antique Bidjar is descended from classical Persian and Caucasian carpets of the seventeenth century. Here it is animated further by the village drawing style or sensibility of the Bidjar weavers, and by the use of a dramatic black ground as a foil for the rich palette of cool terracottas, blues, and greens. A monumental palmette vinescroll border continues the scale and detail of the field design, but set against a sage green ground that contrasts beautifully with the dark field, especially with the added framing effect of the ivory ground minor borders.
