Antique Bezalel, Israel, early twentieth century Although antique Bezalel carpets often contain Jewish or Biblical elements, this one is entirely an homage to classical Persian design. Vines, ribbons, and palmettes produce an allover trellis reminiscent of early Sarouks and Sultanabads, while the sumptuous cartouche border harks back to Safavid forerunners. The color juxtapositions are exquisite, especially the taupe tones on mauve, and they give the rug a very fresh and distinctive quality.
