Antique Bessarabian Tapestry, circa Mid 19th Century Antique Bessarabian tapestry rugs or kilims like this lovely example are famed for their naturalistic patterns of floral garlands and bouquets, much like the Armenian Karabagh pile carpets with similar designs. Ultimately they reflect the realistic design tradition of Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets, although with a more free-flowing, less structured layout evocative of the natural world. Here the softly colored flowers are projected against a variegated green ground redolent of life and lushness. This carpet is a veritable Primavera of interior decor.
