Antique Bakshaish, Persia, late nineteenth centuryWhile the weaver wool, and palette of this magnificent carpet show that it is Bakshaish, its design is exceptional among carpets of this type. More reminiscent of a Serapi or perhaps a Farahan, the field has a monumental medallion design with cornerpieces, all filled with arabesque vinescroll ornamentation. The ‘turtle’ vinescroll border is beautifully rendered on a finer scale that contrasts nicely with the monumentality of the field. Despite the eclectic aspect of the design, the crisp, animated drawing and beautiful coloration are classic Bakshaish.
