43228 Antique Bakshaish, Persia, late nineteenth century - Antique Bakshaishes are sought after for their robust tribal affect and their bold sense of geometry, rather than for their fidelity to classical Persian models, as in the case of this impressive example. Here the weavers were inspired by the ‘Harshang’ design of classical Persian and Caucasian court rugs. Large, richly contoured flame palmettes in ivory and blue alternate with others of different form and n array of smaller flowers, all across a rich terracotta ground. A complex interlacing vinescroll or ‘turtle’ border on a navy ground surrounds the field. This magnificent piece attests to the versatility and precision that Bakshaish weavers could attain when it suited them.
