Early 20th century - A finely detailed Herati pattern sprawls kinetically across the lovely, soft apricot field of this wonderful antique Amritsar Oriental rug. The details in burgundy stand out initially, but further perusal discloses additional elements in mauve tones that receded into the ground, enriching the design without overburdening it. A splash of burgundy at the edges provides just hint at cornerpieces, while the elegant interlacing vine of the border introduces a very different effect in scale and form as a counterpoint to the field.
