Antique Agra, India, early twentieth century. A finely wrought pattern of curling vinescrolls and palmettes in a tone-on-tone coloration swirls and undulates across the field of this elegant antique Agra. A similar design comprises the main border, but reversing the tonality of the field in subtle framing contrast. While the design is essentially Persian, this lovely carpet discloses something of the influence of French Savonnerie and Aubusson carpets, not only in the floral detail, but in the soft tone-on-tone palette as well, reminding us that in the realm of design, East and West are sometimes closer than they seem.
