Antique Agra, India, circa 1900A lavish design of shrubs, palmettes, and leafy clusters derived from classical Persian and Mughal Indian carpets repeats symmetrically across the rich amber-ivory field of this superb antique Agra. The design is carefully worked so as to produce the secondary effect of staggered intersecting ovals. Outlined only by slightly darker minor borders, a lush vinescroll main border preserves the same coloration as the field, giving the entire composition a highly decorative, unified impression. The lustrous wool plays off beautifully against the soft color and subtle design.
