While the design in antique Agra rugs generally derives from the great carpet traditions of Mughal India and Safavid Persia, this one clearly draws on the abstract geometric designs of rugs from nearby China and Tibet. An allover pattern of irregular fine checkers in various reds, browns, blues, greens, and tans repeats endlessly across the field, framed only by a simple border zone in aubergine with an inner tan guard stripe. Very modern in its appeal, the design works like a French pointillist painting by Seurat.
