Antique Agra, India, early twentieth centuryAn elegant allover design of palmettes and slender flowering vines spreads across the pale champagne ground of this highly refined antique Agra. A few of the vines accented in dark blue create a latent ogival medallion effect within the composition. A more richly proportioned palmette vinescroll on a deep blue ground provides the perfect frame, imparting gravity and structure to the wispy delicacy of the field. Agra carpets are famed for their ability to handle such ultra refined Persian designs, but this one is in a class apart.
