Antique Agra, India, late nineteenth century The rich color, ornamental vocabulary, and intricate detail of this antique Indian Agra Oriental rug hark back to the great Kirman "vase carpets" of seventeenth-century Persia. The clusters of large-scale, multi-colored Kirman palmettes contrast effectively against the finer fill of vines and small white flowers or rosettes on the blue ground. Blocks of these rosettes alternate with smaller palmettes in the main border to provide a classically harmonious resolution to the whole.
