Antique Agra Rug, 19th century - A tall, bold tree of life divides the field of this rug into two halves, each of which is filled by medallion-like arrays of vinescrolls in aubergine on a soft gold ground. The simpler, more open border of vinsecolls and large palmettes reverses the color scheme and fine linear density of the field in a clever compositional counterpoint. In the same way the blend of natural floral elements and graphic geometric abstraction in the drawing throughout the rug also revels on the subtle play of opposites.
