Mughal (Mogul) Velvet Textile - 17th-18th Century - This velvet textile illustrates beautifully how well color and texture may combine to produce a stunning artistic impression. The soft gold, pale green, and a rich imperial purplish red come together to great effect, but all the more so because of the lustrous delicacy of the shimmering velvet surface. The piece is opulent yet restrained. The allover of pattern of large and small rosettes in the field is intricate but disciplined. Here the elements are all separate in serial repetition, while the border consists of a vinescroll that is entirely continuous all around the composition. Such contrasts are also subtle, discenible only to those who look with care.
