The Virgin Mary, replete with halo and gorgeous attire, holds an open book or scroll, which she gestures towards. The inscription reads, "Lord, full of grace, Lord Jesus, my Son and my God, hear the prayers of your mother." Bands of varying colors behind her create a unique and very effective backdrop to the intricate foliage, which makes it seem the Virgin is emerging from a garden. On the reverse is the empty cross, with Jerusalem as a medieval Russian city in the background. The spear which pierced Christ's side, and the sponge of vinegar, are on either side. The varying levels of relief present different perspectives and serves to make the mother of Christ stand out vividly. Her attention is directed to the words on the scroll, as if she is meditating on the significance of themessage; which countless have done carrying their icons on long journeys of the body and soul. - (PF.5233)Section of an Enameled Brass Traveling Icon - PF.5233Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 6" (15.2cm) high x5.25(13.3cm)wide Collection:Russian Icons Style:Russian Orthodox Medium:Enameled Bras
