On this very handsome icon Christ and the Virgin Mary are set against a delicate pale blue enameled background. The Virgin holds a scroll upon which is inscribed, "Oh, Lord of the Universe, Save the Son of God, I pray upon my knees". Her head is slightly downcast as she humbly looks upon the radiance of her glorified Son. Her garments are richly ornamented, whereas those of Christ are somewhat more modest. Both styles were typical of late Byzantine art, and adopted by Russian artists. Christ holds an open book upon which is written, "Come to me all those in need. You will be saved." He stares intently as if from beyond the veil of heaven, upon the world and its inhabitants for whom He offers His blessings. On the front cover is the cross, with Jerusalem in the style of a medieval Russian city seen in the background. This icon has an immediate impact, communicating a message to the faithful of their coming salvation, vividly represented by a master artist. - (PF.5196) Enameled Brass Diptych Traveling Icon PF.5196Origin:Russia Circa:1750ADto1900ADDimensions:10.5(26.7cm) high x 6.5" (16.5cm) wide Collection: Russian Icons Style: Russian Orthodox Medium: Enameled Brass
