Truly superb artistry in the sculpture of Christ offered here. Hand carved in ivory, the figure Christ suffering on the cross. It comes with a gilt wood and velvet altar frame. The iron or steel 'nails' attaching the figure to the frame are missing. The back of the figure is so beautifully carved, I don't know that I would want it re-attached. Often the backs of the Christ figures are not particularly well wrought as there is an expectation that this will not be viewed. But all of the details on this figure are very well done. There is some loss to figure; 2 fingers on the left hand, 2 toes on the left foot. Also, the crown of thorns has broken off the front. Dating from the late 1700's early 1800's, perhaps a little damage is acceptable in so lovely an artist's rendering of the Passion of Christ.
