Here is probably the most sought after 18th century German wine bottle (only 4-5 surviving examples): the so-called Mecklenburg onion. Often erroneously referred to in s way as the seal bears, in its monogram, a large letter M. Although this bottle was possibly made at the glassworks at Mecklenburg, the letter M does not have any affiliation. The seal is actually the monogram of a baron and is a monogram of the letters M and S or M and X, (N REVERSE) beneath a baron™s crown. It was probably stamped from a clay seal that was imprinted directly from the baron;s bronze personal matrix seal. In other words, This was the Baron™s personal stock. (See base photo.) See Van den Bossche plate 200 for another specimen of this rare wine bottle. About 6 ¾â€tall.
This one was an Essequibo River find at the old Dutch colony of Guyana several years ago. IT IS ONE OF THE FINEST AND MOST IMPORTANT BOTTLES EVER TO COME OUT OF THERE.
