Exquisite antique American New England High Chest. Circa 1780-1800. The description below was provided by Mr. Joe S. Byerly, founding member of the Museum of Southern Decorative Arts, Winston Salem, and antique dealer/ appraiser from 1962 – to present.
"The chest has a bold crown mold, over six graduated drawers. The drawer fronts, crown mold, and feet are tiger maple, with straight grain maple sides. The chest is raised on original bracket feet with spurs. The case of the chest is dovetailed together as well as all the drawers. The hardware is of a later date, but is the correct style. The chest is well proportioned. The chest has been refinished at some point, but retains a nice mellow color."
This chest measures 59 1/2 inches tall with a 35 1/2 inch width and a 17 1/2 inch depth The top crown molding measures 39 1/2 inch width x 20 inch depth.
