Antique Wilhelm von Kaulbach Book from 1863 or 1864 with brass centerpiece portrait of Goethe.

Title: Goethe`s friends (Goethe's Frauen- Gestalten)

There are 21 photographic illustrations. The exact publication date of this book is not established since it was part of a family collection and my grandparents were the collectors and I just got it after they passed away.

Appraiser opinion:
"A version of this book was produced by this publisher after 1862. This book is by Wilhelm von Kaulbach, who was the head of the Munich Academy of Art, and one of the prominent German artists of that era. Bruckmann innovated in illustrations of original art which were reproduced photo-mechanically. They also innovated by publishing the same work in a variety of formats, techniques and prices. This title in itself is scarce, and, in fact, appears to be in most institutional collections only in microforms. Another copy of this work -with a slightly different title, with same brass centerpiece portrait of Goethe on the cover, and with a portrait frontispiece and 21 plates - sold for $2178 in 2007 at auction. That book was dated in the auction catalogue as [1864]. Your version is an earlier version either from 1863 or 1864 (Bruckmann moved to Munich in 1863). Or it could be somewhat later, perhaps 1867."
