SOLD Antique, 18th century, Polish nobleman walking cane, Obuszek, the steel head including the three stage socket is hand forged in one-piece, in the form of War Hammer – Nadziak, with rounded hammer-face and octagonal stem, and also down-curved faced, beak-shaped rear-fluke and octagonal stem, mounted on its original haft composed of stacked leather straps on an iron core, fitted with a steel spike at the base.

The walking cane, Obuszek, with the head in the form of the war hammer, nadziak, was very popular among polish nobles during the 17th and 18th century and was used not only used as a waking stick, but also as a deadly weapon often used in brawls. Therefore it was forbidden to carry it in local councils, and also in the churches. In old Poland wearing a obuszek was so widespread that it even had a rhymed saying: "Bez karabeli ani z pościeli, bez obuszka ani od łóżka."

MEASUREMENTS: Overall length; 84 cm (33 in), length of the head; 11.2 cm (4 3/8 in).

CONDITION: In good condition considering its age, showing the age and usage, surface of the head and spike slightly pitted, two minor chips in the leather. Free of any repairs or restoration.
