Antique Crown Milano glass humidor / biscuit barrel or cookie jar with silver plate lid. Made by Mount Washington in the USA, circa 1880''s to 1890''s. Measures approx 9 inches to the top of the butterfly; just over 6 inches to the top of the glass rim. Sold to me as a humidor, this exact shape, but with a very simple lid, is shown on page 65 of B Sisk''s book on Mt Washington Art Glass, where it is referred to as a Webb (who had permission to make Burmese glass from the Mt. Washington factory), biscuit barrel. Further examples of the same shape, (different glass) are shown in the section on Royal Flemish glass. The ground colour is yellow throughout, very pale at the bottom, darkening towards the top. The inside is glossy white. The rim has a ring of pink ''jewels''. THe surface of the jar is very beautifully hand painted with fernlike foliage and tiny flowers. Delicate lines and very subtle colours in a wide variety of gentle tones. The unmarked silver plate lid is gorgeous: round and domed, with a detailed tobacco leaf on top of the dome. On top of the leaf is a finial on which a butterfly is perched. Sturdy outspread wings make it easy to lift and hold the lid. There are no marks on either the humidor or the lid. Condition is very good. Very negligible roughage from the lid on the rim, mentioned only for the sake of total accuracy.
