New England Colonial Hand Hewn Cherry Wooden Trencher Bowl Circa 1700s (NBA-656)
Price: $375.00
DESCRIPTION: Wooden slabs intended for the meal to be presented on have been found in tombs and excavations dating as far back as 500 BC. During medieval times, trenchers were more than a simple slab, often carved into a shallow bowl. More oblong shapes were used to share meals between two people. Trenchers were well suited for meals that were stewed, and sopped up with rough bread as was common in England. Pewter had replaced wooden ware by the time the colonists arrived on North American shores, but was expensive and used only on special occasions. Wooden trenchers were used when the family sat down to dinner with no company. Commonly they were shared, and were considered valuable enough to be left to family in a will. We are pleased to offer this Antique Hand Hewn Colonial Large Cherry Wood Trencher Bowl from New England circa 1700s for your consideration. Because of its hardness, durability and beauty, cherry was a frequent choice for hand made items including furniture, boxes, bowls and musical instruments. Cherry wood comes from the cherry tree a temperate hardwood that grows in northeastern U.S. and Canada. Look closely at the patina, the grain of the wood and the hollowed out of round shape that is a trademark of a hand hewn antique wooden treen trencher bowl. The antique cherry wood trencher bowl is large in size hand hewn from a single solid piece of cherry, and is thick and heavy. The inside of the early trencher shows chopping, cutting and lots scaring. It is a wonder this early bowl has survived without cracks or damage. The antique wooden trencher is in excellent condition with an aged appropriate patina. The antique wooden hand hewn early trencher has a deep inside bowl depth with a flat outside resting bottom. The antique early trencher bowl has been cleaned and oiled with organic bee’s wax. No stain has been added.
