Antique Victorian 18carat gold, Siberian amethyst and pearl pendant necklace with elephant theme. Made circa 1880. Chain is 15 1/8 inches long when extended (not including the pendant). Pendant drops 1 3/4 inches. The central amethyst is 3/4inch (20mm) long. Total weight:25.3grams. AMethyst approximately 21.5carats. Smaller amethysts 4mm each. Necklace consists of a chain and pendant. The links of the chain are very unusual - composed of a pair of leaves with loops joining to the next pair. The pendant is quite exceptional: a very large amethyst, almost 22carats, rectangular brilliant cut, with canted corners, colette set in gold, the mount conforming to the shape of the amethyst. On either side is a row of pearls, ending in a smaller, round amethyst. A scroll of gold snakes along the bottom. The upper two corners are embellished with a pair of elephant heads - each with fantastic detail. Workmanship is of the highest order. Very rare theme and quality.
