eting a skullcap crown and then repeated in his very full beard. The butterfly gentleman is more Assyrian in appearance, with long locks and a more carefully trimmed beard. Both men are shown in profile. Both are in very good condition. The bottom two cameos are carved from other hardstones. One, in a buttery agate-looking stone with a soft brown background carved away from the whiter upper area, depicts a beautiful Classical woman, probably Greek if one were to guess from her features and the diaphenous robe partially shown, that reveals a bare shoulder. She has a complex band in her hair with gentle curles escaping to frame her face and at the nape of her neck. Great carving with super detail, if in need of a gentle cleaning. The last was saved for best: this is known as a gryllus - it is a single cameo that depicts no less than 4 heads, both human and bestial, metamorphosizing into and from each other, in profile, under a seashell. The carving is exquisite and brilliant, using at least 3 layers of the onyx. It depicts one woman, one sheep and two men. They are carved in white above a black background and above them all is a dark brown, shiny shell or other creature that partially overlaps itself. This incredible piece is extremely rare and the workmanship of the most superior quality. The general condition of the earrings is very good. Parts could do with a cleaning if the new owner so desired and one could hang something from the little loops underneath the center of the top cameos. No damage.
