Colonial New Zealand 19th century necklace and earrings made in kauri gum - the ancient fossilized resin of the New Zealand kauri tree. Similar to amber, but not quite as old. The gum has been fashioned into little acorns, and the necklace is chain link with three suspended acorns, the central one being larger than the two flanking ones. Necklace length is 40.5 cm, and the largest acorn is 2 cm high by 1.5 cm diameter. The chain is silver, but the catch is base metal (appears to be brass). The earrings are screw fitting, and the drop from the ear is about 3.5 cm. The earring metal is also base metal, with brass chain suspension. Very pretty set, late 19th to very early 20th century.
