Antique Victorian Neo Etruscan Memento Mori memorial / mourning 14K gold, black enamel and cabochon amethyst brooch. Made circa 1860-1880. Bullseye shape - almost 1 /1/2 inches in diameter. Weighs 17 grams. Round, with borders of twisted gold wire in different thicknesses, very typical of the Neo Etruscan filigree jewellery of the time. The sloping surface, like the side of a cone is decorated with a black enamel pattern, leading to more filigree/wire work, which borders a fabulous cabochon amethyst - 1/2 inch in diameter. The pin at the back has a simple C-clasp. The original curved glass/crystal covers a compartment that might be used for a locket of hair of the departed / loved one. Part of a name, written in black is visible. There are no hallmarks, but the gold tests for at least 14 carats. General condition is very good, but a very close inspection with a magnifying glass shows tiny flaws in the surface of the gold (I can''t see them even with my glasses). Status: For Sale Reference#: 3756 Condition: good Year: 1860 Title: ANTIQUE VICTORIAN GOLD ENAMEL AMETHYST BROOCH MEMORIAL
