Antique 14k gold and coral brooch depicting the Gorgon, Medusa. Made circa 1840-80. Measures just under 1 1/2 inches accross widest part. Carved from a wonderful bright orange piece of natural coral. Shaped rectangle, slightly wider on the left than the right hand side. Superb carving depicting the mythological head of the Gorgon Medusa, whose famous gaze was considered protective. Open mouth with sublime detail. Hair consists of a wild array of swirling curls and snakes weaving and twirling between them. The back of the brooch has a 14carat gold pin, which is not in it's original position (as can be seen from the extra pair of holes), but was fitted during the VIctorian era as well. Very good condition.
