Antique, Victorian brooch / pin. Tourmaline, diamond, pearl set in silver on 18 carat gold. Made 1850-1880, most likely in France. Slightly over 1 3/4 inches accross the front. Weighs 13.6grams. Central tourmaline is 5-6carats. The brooch is classic Victorian. A large, rectangular tourmaline in a fabulous deep, dark green colour with faceted sides forms the center. It is held within a colette with tiny crimped border. Surrounding the center are scrolls, fans and feathers, all set with diamonds and with a pearl on each quadrant. Rose cut diamonds are wonderfully, close set. Diamonds flash and glint, their delicacy in contrast to the strong center stone which gleams or recedes as the light catches it. The back of the brooch that would be in contact with the wearer''s clothes is in 18k gold. Most Victorian jewellery was silver set on a gold plate at the back. There are a number of hallmarks on the gold as well as on the pin. Good condition.
