Antique very rare double miniature portrait brooch / pin. Enamel set in 18k gold. French, made circa 1820-30. Length approx 30mm ( a little over an inch). Delicate, typically Georgian / very early Victorian gold mount. The top depicts a beautiful, blondhaired young mother with a red ribbon in her hair, surrounded by her 3 babies. She nurses one, while another clings to her shoulder and the 3rd looks lovingly on. The woman with demurely downcast eyes, the details of which can only be seen with magnification - very lovely. This warmly maternal family scene is exceptional in itself, but the huge surprise comes when you turn over the brooch and discover the magnificent nude on the back. Again with the beautiful eyes, slightly darker hair in ringlets and a robe that fully reveals her upper body. A necklace or scarf falling between her breasts only serves to emphasize her nudity. The young woman is looking at herself in a mirror, held up in one hand. Even the fingers are beautifully depicted. Each side of the jewel is exquisite. The quality of the painting is fabulous - very sensitive and accomplished fine artistry. Colours delicate and refined, have survived perfectly as enamel does not fade over the years. The brooch might have started out as a pendant and been made into a brooch at a later date (a very long time ago), but there is no sign of any kind of alteration. The simple c-clasp has French hallmarks. Very good condition with no damage/loss/restoration to be found. True museum quality.
