Antique 22 carat gold necklace. Made circa 1890 - 1900 in southern India and reset on a black cord backing for comfort and ease of wearing. Knot on rope slides, so the necklace will fit any size neck. Necklace consists of 37 individual components, each measuring approx 3/8inch long. They consist of a large, round globe with point at the end. On the opposite side is a flat disk, cut out in the form of a plant, possibly a flowering jasmine, with fine detail. The black rope adds to the drama of the gold and the necklace looks wonderful when worn. The stark black and gold contrasts nicely with the delicacy of the detail and looks great whether worn by day with jeans or by night as evening wear. Good condition. Good antique Mughal / Indian jewellery combines the wonders of ages gone by with amazing design and delicacy executed by outstanding craftsmen and is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain as it grows in appreciation throughout the world. A necklace, also from Tamil Nadu, with many similar elements is shown on page 98 of Usha R Bala Krishnan and Meera Sushil Kumar''s book, Dance of the Peacock.
