Antique 22carat gold earrings from Gujarat in NorthWest India. Made circa 1900 -1920. Measure approx 2 inches in length; weigh approx 9 grams. Ethnic / Tribal earrings with a distinctly Art Deco, Modern look to them. HIghly wearable with original shepherd hooks, with wound wire which will help hold the earrings in place. The earrings consist of an acorn shape seperated from a cube of faceted diamond shapes by a belt comprised of 3 rows of minute granulations. The loop and cube are joined by a cone made of twisted filigree wire. No marks. Very good, original conditioin. Good antique Mughal / Indian jewellery combines the wonders of ages gone by with amazing design and delicacy executed by outstanding craftsmen and is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain as it grows in appreciation throughout the world. In her book on Indian earrings, pg78-79, Waltraud Ganguly explains that these earrings, called vedhla, were worn by the relatively wealthy Mer of Saurashtra community and that they were given by parents or in-laws, and apparrently worn alone, without other earrings to detract from them.
