Antique 22 carat gold and coral hoop earrings. Made 80-100 years ago by a master craftsman in India. Measure approx 1 3/8 inches accross widest point. Weigh 14.1 grams. Outstanding classic design - large golden hoops adorned with gold enclosed coral beads. 3 beads to each earring. The beads are enclosed in very fine wire work, coiled around itself in circles, exposing the coral in the center. Double pattern where the coils meet and the coral shows in the space between them. Each bead is seperated from it''s neighbour by golden discs. On either side, holding all in place is a coil of tiny-sized twisted filigree wire. Earrings close with a small loop catch. The ends are narrow to facilitate ease of insertion in earholes. Very good condition. Good antique Mughal / Indian jewellery combines the wonders of ages gone by with amazing design and delicacy executed by outstanding craftsmen and is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain as it grows in appreciation throughout the world. In her book on Indian earrings, pg106-110, Waltraud Ganguly explains that these earrings, called Bali originate in Himachal Pradesh in northern India.
