Antique 22 carat gold, coral and gemstone earrings. Made in southern India, circa 1900 - 1925. Approximately 1 3/4 inches long, not including the loop, which adds about 1/2 inch to the length. Antique earrings made of very high carat gold, handworked with coral and each set with a small gemstone, probably a spinel or low grade ruby (and tested to be a natural gem, not glass). A couple of gold globes followed by coral beads in bright orange support a cluster of tubular shaped coral ending in tiny round coral beads and finally an even tinier gold bead. Each part at sharp angles to the drop, forming a marvellous cluster with strong organic appearance. Coral is attached by gold wire, entirely hidden from sight, but shown by parting the coral, in the ''photos. The cluster is followed by a largely hidden gold ring from which similar coral groups stand at right angles with another pair dropping at their side. Inbetween is a red gemstone, which tests as a spinel or low grade ruby. A much larger coral bead with beautifully worked gold terminal forms the bottom of the earrings. The early tribal or ethnic sense of broad geometry and form, contrasting with the finest detail, is clearly shown in these earrings. They look fabulous and are a ''must have'' for any lover of good quality antique coral jewellery. No marks. Very good, original conditioin. Good antique Mughal / Indian jewellery combines the wonders of ages gone by with amazing design and delicacy executed by outstanding craftsmen and is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain as it grows in appreciation throughout the world.
