Antique 18 carat gold earrings, with gold stamp work, granulation and filligree work. Made in Gujerat, northwest India, circa 1900 - 1915. Measure 2 inches long. Weigh 14.5 grams. Highly wearable antique gold earrings. Top part in the form of a sculpted flower, the gold hand-beaten and arching in naturalistic form. Each petal separated from it''s neighbour by fine filigree wire-work. The center consists of an intricate design - a series of stamped patterns in star and circular shape with encrusted minute granulation, from tiny to tinier granules and more delicate filigree work. The long necklike drop is a series of geometric shapes. Some using only the unadorned geometry of planes and angles to show off the gold to full effect; other parts decorated in granulation and filigree work. The earrings have gold loops which are comfortable to wear and easy to insert. Outstanding workmanship resulting in Classy elegance, suitable for day or night-time wear. No marks. Very good, original conditioin. Good antique Mughal / Indian jewellery combines the wonders of ages gone by with amazing design and delicacy executed by outstanding craftsmen and is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain as it grows in appreciation throughout the world. In her book on Indian earrings, pg84-85, Waltraud Ganguly explains that these earrings, called Phul vedhla, originate with the Saurashtra community and that they were given to a bride by her in-laws, and apparrently worn in the helix of the ear.
