Very Victorian Romantic painting of a woman's head in profile, smelling a large pink rose. Hand painted and signed by the artist, the portrait is encased in an asymmetric cartouche edged with thick gilt rocailles. Surrounding the cartouche, 2 good hand painted roses and a subtle foliate motif, all on a pink ground. The edges of the lid and bottom are gilt. Condition is very good to excellent; no wear, loss, chips, flakes, crazing or hazing. Perhaps a hint of loss to the thick gilt rocailles. I cannot actually find any loss or wear, but...........erring on the side of caution. Perhaps a microscope would show some ;) Utterly feminine piece, beautifully wrought, gorgeous!
The jar is large: 5.5" diameter, 3" tall. It is marked "D & Co/ France", the mark for Delinieres & Co, Limoges; in use from 1894-1900. Stunning addition to your collection.
