Antique French turtle top boulle-work game box with mother of pearl counters or markers. Mid 19th century, lovely condition. Probably used to play Quadrille, a passtime enjoyed in French aristocratic salons. Andre-Charles Boulle, the most famous ebeniste in 17th century France, developed a complicated inlay process of cutting and engraving brass in elaborately scrolled designs and filling in the spaces with tortoiseshell, which was often tinted red.
