Batik Belanda. Hip wrapped sarong, Pekalonga, c. 1930. This beautifully designed cloth with pastel shades over a cream background and artistic treatment of European flowers is eminent example of elegant, high-status batik worn during the mid 1930s. The Indo-European style, kepala (panel) is adorned with possibly peonies and sprigs of orchids, Javanese style. Butterfly and birds hover above the bouquet. The kepala background is solid cream while the larger skirt portion has intricate vine flowers throughout with overlay of three additional floral bouquets similar to kepala. Symmetric borders of garlands are edged by tiny striped borders. Hand-drawn canted wax resist on machine woven cotton; synthetic dyes; 40" x 80" flat sarong.Very good condition with exception of one small hole above flower bouquet in kepala (visible in photo) repaired/darned by original owner; no other defects. Overall condition very good and collectible.
