William IV, dated Decr 20 183? 183? Silkwork Sampler by Eliza Gardner. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering strawberry border. Colours gold, cream, greens, light brown, copper, magenta and dark brown. Verses read ''Life is the time to serve the Lord> The time t insure the great reward> And while the lamp holds out to burn> The vilest sinner may return. ''God gives us friends who seek our good> And strive to make us wise> His bounteous hand provides our food> And all our wants supplies''. Signed and dated ''Eliza Gardner Decr 20 183?''. Last number missing due to a hole. A wonderful set of motifs, including lions on plinths, a posy of flowers with a butterfly, birds, potted flowering plants, fir trees, crowns, horses, recumbent cats and stags, and shells. Fair. Many holes. Loss of ground in the bottom corners. Several stain specks. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. Slight colour run around some of the olive green threads. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 14ins by 13.25ins wide
