Victorian, dated 1847 1847 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Priscilla Wright. Framed in an old, possibly original, mahogany frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass. Glued around the edges only, to a wooden stretcher frame. Brown paper dust cover. The sampler is worked in silk on fine linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Wonderful floral border. Colours gold, blue, copper, black, dark brown and dark green. Verse entitled ''THE IVY'' reads ''Ivy!thou art ever green,> Let me changeless,then, be seen,> Whil my Saviour loves me, ne''er,> Let my love grow old and sere.> Ivy!clinging round the tree,> Gladly would I learn of thee,> Clinging,as the year goes round,> To the cross would I be found.''. Signed and dated ''Sarah Priscilla Wright 1847''. Floral motifs and a bird perched on a flowering branch. Good. A few small holes in the top right corner, and along the left edge. One repair in the bottom right corner. A few stains and specks. No stitch losses. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound and ready to hang. 16ins by 12ins wide
