Victorian, dated 1846 1846 ''Flight to Egypt'' Sampler by Alice Lewellin Morgan. Framed in an old, black wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in wool and silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours olive green, cream, blue, red, navy blue, pale green, copper, gold, black, pink, light green, brown and light blue. Verse reads ''The rising sun with cheerful beams> Shines o''er the silver lea> The woods and vales fresh> sweets display> And smile on all but me> The vill> age youths> with> lightsome> steps> Trip o''er> the fields> in glee> While on> the spray the> blackbird sings> And all seem> gay> but me> My sins have pierc''d> my saviour''s side> Have nail''d him to the tree> And yet I spurn''d> His offer''d grace> Although He died> for me> To whom shall> I my troubles tell> Or where for> comfort flee> Dear Jesus> cast a pitying look> And deign to> smile on me''. Signed and dated ''Alice Lewellin Morgan her work in the year of our Lord 1846 Aged.11''. A wonderful set of motifs, including the ''Flight into Egypt'' depicting Mary and the baby Jesus seated on a donkey, being led by Joseph. The ''Return from Egypt'' depicting the family, with Jesus as a young child, on their return journey. A figure with a hoop, dogs, stags, trees, rabbits, birds, a potted flowering plant and a scene depicting a lake surrounded by trees, with a castle in the background, a sailing boat on the water, and a cow at the water''s edge. Good. A number of small holes to the sampler itself. Old tack holes, some with slight rust staining, around the edges. A few stain specks in two corners. Very minor stitch loss to the verse and one ''Egypt''. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. Very slight colour run around the black silk threads. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in very good condition. Wire and hooks included for hanging. 24.5ins by 23.5ins wide
