Victorian, dated 1844 1844 Sampler by Elisabeth Scoular. Framed in a modern wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with card backing. The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours orange, cream, red, greens, gold, black, pink, magenta, browns and blues. Numbers 1-14. Signed and dated ''Elisabeth Scoular Aged 9 Years 1844''. A wonderful set of motifs, including a standing couple holding hands, the man with a walking stick and bag on his back, birds, houses, men with walking sticks, flowers, dogs, potted flowering plants, rabbits, stags, fruit baskets, fir trees, blossoming trees, a seated lady holding a parrot, a bird cage and spotted dogs. Very Good. No holes. One pale patchy stain. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. Colour run around the black threads. Neatly and evenly stretched. The sampler may have been reduced in size at some point in it''s life. The top border shows signs of this, as well as a border fragment being stitched in the top left corner. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 15.75ins by 15.5ins wide
