Victorian, dated 1841 Large 1841 Woolwork Sampler by Martha Johnson. Framed in a mahogany veneer frame with glass. Edges-only glued to the reverse of a wooden backing board. The sampler is worked in wool and cotton on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering strawberry border. Colours red, green, pale blue, light brown, gold, white, black, pink, orange, magenta, dark brown and light green. Verse reads ''The time will come my dearist friend> When all our works will have an end> And if we be for heaven prepared> We shall possess a great reward''. Signed and dated ''Martha Johnson work done in 1841''. A good set of motifs, including a man about to throw a stick for his dog, birds perched in trees, a potted flowering plant, a lady with her dog and flowers. Generally Good. A few small pulls in the canvas. A number of small stains. No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and could be hung ''as is''. 26.5ins by 27ins wide
